South Africa Replaces Libya As CAN Hosts

South Africa will replace Libya as hosts of the 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, CAF said in a statement on Tuesday. Libya, where fighting continues for control of several cites, take over the 2017 tournament from original hosts South Africa.

The swap deal was agreed after the first half of a two-day CAF executive committee meeting.

"The Executive Committee also decided on the swapping between Libya and South Africa for the 2013 and 2017 respectively, considering the current political situation prevailing in Libya. This means that South Africa will host 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and Libya, 2017 Africa Cup of Nations," a CAF statement read.

The decision means South Africa will stand in for Libya a second time having held the African Youth Championship last April.

CAF has also awarded Namibia the 2014 African Women's Championship, Senegal the 2015 African Youth Championship, Niger the 2015 African Junior Championship and Madagascar the 2017 African Junior Championship.

African Recipes: Banga Soup

Banga Soup

Banga is one of the most delicious soups I have ever tasted. it has the savoriness of Gbegiri but it's in a class of it own. The soup is widely enjoyed all over Africa and it's called different things by different groups. (Banga by the Deltans/Benins, Obe eyin by the yorubas, Mbanga by the Cameroonians, amiedi by the urhobos and obey-ekpoitsekiris to name a few).  If you havent tried it yet, please do you will not regret it.

African Slang Of The Day: JAGUDA

Jaguda (Jah-goo-dah)

Meaning: Crook; fraudulent person.

Using Jaguda in a sentence:

"The pikin wey dey beg me to dash them moni na jaguda."
meaning
"All of these kids asking me for money are crooks."

Examples of Jagundas
  1. Swiper the Fox.
  2. Bank of America.

Habesha: Fusion of Color

Habesha means to mix in Amharic, the Ethiopian language. Emerging designer Sheilla Constance Sidney harmoniously mix the African heritage with the European and Asian styles. The unique collections offer a sense of chic, of natural harmony between tradition and modernization.

The Wax, an African fabric, is one Habesha’s distinctive element. It is a patterned cotton that uses bright colors, very popular in different countries throughout Africa. The prints will be different depending on the African region:Kioys in Kenya, Kola Nut or Indigo in Gambia, Langa Lapuin South Africa, to list a few. Each tribal group has its own specific preferences for colours, designs, and each print tells a story.

Chin Chin

Chin chin is a much loved West African pastry that serves as a snack, dessert, or "street food". Chin chin holds a special place in the hearts and stomachs of West Africans, as I have seen by the amount of searches and discussion it generates. There are about as many recipes for chin chin as there are ethnic groups in Nigeria - a lot! The ingredients and variations are endless.

Some of you like the hard, crunchy type, others swear by a softer, lighter recipe. You might season your chin chin with oranges and cinnamon, or with nutmeg, or just enjoy the plain buttery flavour. Common ground is that this is a pastry of flour, eggs, milk, butter, salt and sugar. It might have baking soda, but if you like the hard and crunchy type you should leave that out. It is deep fried in oil, a step that seems to be unnegotiable. Suggestions of baking it for less calories invite scoffing.

Shaping is also an issue. The no-frills shape is simply to cut the dough into 1/2 inch squares and fry it. The fancier and authentic method is poking a hole in the dough and pulling one end through, to form a knot. This is easy and fast once you get the hang of it, and much more fun to serve. Here is my recipe, for what it's worth, and I hope it is what you have been looking for.
