Education in Botswana


To the Botswana government, Botswana education takes the high priority. In the sector of Botswana education, the Ministry of Education spends at around 30 percent of the public spending. The education in Botswana revolves around the policy, that an informed and educated society would turn to a productive, prosperous and innovative society. 

The Botswana Education System has the 7-3-2 structure viz. Primary School, JSS and SSS. In the education of Botswana, the government provides the free and universal education to the students for 10 years. There are certain objectives of the national education of Botswana. The objectives are:
  • To highlight science and technology in the educational system
  • To hoist the standards of education at all the levels
  • To offer lifelong education to every section of the society
  • To attain competence in progress of education
After attaining independence, the country of Botswana has shown outstanding advancement in providing the enlightening conveniences to the entire population. There is a national commission of education which has been selected to assess the educational system of Botswana. 

In the year 1999, the civic spending on Botswana education was about 9.1 % of the GDP. In the year 1996, in the primary level there were 318,629 students at Botswana and the number of teachers was 12,785. The University of Botswana was established in the year 1982 on 1st July.
